In 1900, DAR purchased Meadow Garden, home of George Walton, and placed the historic house in
the care of the Georgia State Society and the Augusta Chapter. The women then began the hard work of preserving such a historically significant structure. The Society has maintained the home for 120 years.
On November 21, 1901, Meadow Garden opened to the public as a historic house museum. In the speeches on opening day, they celebrated this tremendous achievement.
Meadow Garden was the primary residence of lawyer, politician, and patriot George Walton from 1792 until his death in 1804. George Walton was one of three men to represent Georgia in the Continental Congress and has distinction as one of the youngest signers of the Declaration of Independence. His home is a National Register of Historic Places landmark and the pride and joy of the Georgia State Society, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Meadow Garden is near and dear to our hearts! We have members serving as docents, patrons, and board members. We are pleased to provide both time and monetary gifts for the beautiful historic site.
