Benjamin Hawkins (1754\u20131816), often referred to as Colonel Hawkins, was a farmer, statesman, and Indian agent. He served as a delegate to the Continental Congress, as a United States senator, and as an agent to the Creek Nation. Hawkins also served on George Washington\u2019s staff as a French interpreter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1785, Hawkins represented Congress in negotiations with the Creek Indians. In 1796, Washington appointed him General Superintendent of Indian Affairs, responsible for all tribes south of the Ohio River. Hawkins later became the principal agent to the Creek Tribe and moved to what is now Crawford County, Georgia. There, he taught agricultural practices to the Creeks and established a farm at his home on the Flint River. Over time, he added mills and a trading post to his holdings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For years, Hawkins met with the Creeks at his farm and helped maintain the longest period of peace between the settlers and the Creek Indians.
