The Cherokee word “Chestatee” means “a place of lights” and came from the Indians who lit torches at night from bonfires along the river. The light attracts fish.

This DAR chapter might not go fishing, but it does carry a torch for our nation through the implementation of its objectives. Each chapter is a part of the National society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) and is a service organization. Some of their goals are to cherish, maintain, and extend the institutions of American freedom, to foster true patriotism and love of country, and to aid in securing for all mankind all the blessings of liberty. Historical, educational, and patriotic objectives form the foundation of the chapters’ interactions with the community.

The Chestatee River Chapter collected and shipped care packages to troops in the Middle East. Other activities include gathering and recording historical information from local war veterans and attending genealogy workshops.

Membership in the DAR is open to women who are eighteen years or older and who can prove a lineal bloodline from an ancestor who aided in achieving American Independence.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading
