{"id":22,"date":"2024-08-25T20:32:21","date_gmt":"2024-08-25T20:32:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chapters.georgiastatedar.org\/generaldanielnewnan\/?page_id=22"},"modified":"2024-11-23T21:53:06","modified_gmt":"2024-11-23T21:53:06","slug":"chapter","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/chapters.georgiastatedar.org\/generaldanielnewnan\/chapter\/","title":{"rendered":"chapter"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\">Our Chapter<\/h1>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 120px; margin-right: 120px; text-align: justify;\">The General Daniel Newnan Chapter, NSDAR, was the ambition of Mrs. Sara Beams.\u00a0 When she moved to Coweta County, she found that the Sara Dickinson Chapter, organized in 1903, had been disbanded in 1957.\u00a0 As an active member of NSDAR in another state, she began the process of starting a chapter locally.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 120px; margin-right: 120px; text-align: justify;\">On January 18, 1986, nine members of NSDAR and <span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">interested persons met with State Officers at the home of Mrs. Beams to organize a chapter in Newnan, Georgia.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"margin-left: 120px; text-align: left;\"><em>Coweta County Courthouse<\/em><\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 120px; margin-right: 120px; text-align: justify;\"><em>(Information taken from Coweta County Chronicles &#8211; 1928 edition.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 120px; margin-right: 120px; text-align: justify;\">The<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-149 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/chapters.georgiastatedar.org\/generaldanielnewnan\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/94\/2024\/11\/Coweta_Co_Courthouse-244x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"244\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chapters.georgiastatedar.org\/generaldanielnewnan\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/94\/2024\/11\/Coweta_Co_Courthouse-244x300.jpg 244w, https:\/\/chapters.georgiastatedar.org\/generaldanielnewnan\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/94\/2024\/11\/Coweta_Co_Courthouse.jpg 504w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 244px) 100vw, 244px\" \/><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">\u00a0Chapter was named for General Daniel Newnan, an outstanding Georgia statesman who served in the War of 1812.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 120px; margin-right: 120px; text-align: justify;\">General Newnan commanded the Georgia volunteers as Captain of the Militia in two actions with the East Florida Indians in the Fall of 1812.\u00a0 After the war, he resided on his plantation near McDonough, Georgia, and in November 1813 General Newnan was made Brigadier General.\u00a0 In January 1814, he was given a vote of thanks by the General<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 120px; margin-right: 120px; text-align: justify;\">Assembly of the State of Georgia for the courage, patriotism and fortitude manifested in his service against the Creek Indians.\u00a0 In 1817, he was commissioned as Major General of the State Militia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 120px; margin-right: 120px; text-align: justify;\">In 1825, he was elected to the office of Secretary of State of Georgia and elected to the U.S. Congress, serving from March 1831 to March 1833.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 120px; margin-right: 120px; text-align: justify;\">General Newnan died in Walker County, Georgia, on January 16, 1851 and was buried at Newnan Springs near Rossville, Georgia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 120px; margin-right: 120px; text-align: justify;\">On October 10, 1986, the General Daniel Newnan Chapter NSDAR was officially chartered with thirty members.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our Chapter The General Daniel Newnan Chapter, NSDAR, was the ambition of Mrs. Sara Beams.\u00a0 When she moved to Coweta County, she found that the Sara Dickinson Chapter, organized in 1903, had been disbanded in 1957.\u00a0 As an active member of NSDAR in another state, she began the process of starting a chapter locally.
