His parents Josiah Tattnall, Sr. and Mary Mullryne were married in South Carolina. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the outset of the Revolutionary War, Tattnall, Sr. pledged loyalty to King George III and helped the Governor of Georgia escape. Tattnall and his family fled to England. They were declared traitors by the Revolutionary Council in Savannah. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While living in England, Josiah Tattnall (Jr.), feeling strongly about the Patriots\u2019 cause, ran away from England and returned to Georgia in 1782, where he joined the Continental Army. Later, Josiah Tattnall became a captain (commander of the Chatham Artillery), then a colonel, and finally a brigadier general in the Georgia Militia. He served in the State House of Representatives from 1795 to 1796.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He served in the United States Senate from February 20, 1796, to March 3, 1799. He was the Governor of Georgia from 1801 to 1802. After he took office as Governor, the newly created county \u2014 Tattnall County \u2014 was named for him. On June 6, 1803, he died at New Providence, British West Indies.
