Our Chapter

The George Walton Chapter, NSDAR, was organized on July 4, 1901, with Mrs. Anne Elizabeth Forman Dismukes serving as the chapter’s first regent.
On July 4, 2001, the Mayor of Columbus, Georgia, presented a proclamation to our chapter celebrating 100 years of service to God, Home, and Country. July Fourth was declared George Walton Chapter, NSDAR, Day. The chapter was named in honor of George Walton, one of Georgia’s signers of the Declaration of Independence and one of the youngest signers of the document at age 26. He also served as a six-term congressional representative, two-term governor of Georgia, one-term senator of the United States, and four-term judge of the Superior Court. He served one term as chief justice of the state court. He was known for his home in Augusta, Georgia, Meadow Garden, now a house museum owned and operated by the Georgia State Society, NSDAR.
Our chapter is active with our local youth. We sponsor the American History Essay Contest for students in grades five through eight and co-sponsor of the DAR Good Citizens program for high school seniors, the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) awards program, and the Lucy Spell Raiford Society, Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.). Our chapter is also active in Columbus, Georgia, by remembering veterans in a local senior living facility, participating in Constitution Week activities, and recognizing local businesses that fly the Flag of the United States of America.
The George Walton Chapter, NSDAR, meets one Thursday morning a month from September to May. Email us if you would like to attend.
