The name of our chapter was selected because Jared Irwin was a 2-time Governor of Georgia and settled in Washington County after the Revolutionary War. He is buried on what was once Irwin property. There is a great monument in downtown Sandersville to commemorate him. These early daughters marked all the Revolutionary Patriots’ graves known at that time (11). We have now documented that over 70 Patriots are buried in Washington County, thanks to many dedicated local researchers. In 1955, a parcel of land was given to our chapter to start a park. We are the only Georgia chapter to own and maintain its own park. Over the years, many improvements have been made to the park, which is located on the main street running through Sandersville. In 2005, the local Daughters really improved the park by not only beautifying and landscaping it but also commissioning a life-sized bronze statue of George Washington, because we are in Washington County (one of the first counties in the country to be named for General Washington). It is a great place to visit!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Our Chapter The Governor Jared Irwin Chapter was founded on March 12, 1910, by 16 prominent ladies.
