Our Chapter
The John Clarke Chapter was organized on April 18, 1917 with thirteen members. For over 108 years the chapter has served the community of Social Circle and other areas of Walton County. The chapter was named in honor of John Clarke, the 31st Governor of Georgia. Clarke served as Georgia governor for two terms and was later named Indian Agent for Florida.
John Clarke was born in 1766 in North Carolina to Elijah and Hannah Clarke. He joined his father’s militia unit at the age of fourteen and rose to the rank of Major General in the Georgia Militia. He fought at the Battle of Kettle Creek along with his father, Elijah Clarke.
John Clarke and his wife Nancy died in 1832 in Florida of yellow fever, and both were buried there until 1923, when their graves were relocated to Marietta National Cemetery.
