Mitchell. The chapter was chartered on June 7, 1974, with sixteen organizing members, including eight Juniors. The chapter was named for nearby historic springs that Indigenous people used as a major water source. The wealthy coastal plantation families of Brunswick, St. Simons Island, and Jekyll Island would come out to the artesian springs during the summer seeking escape from the heat, healing waters, and leisure. In 1848, a wealthy Northern merchant named Sylvester Mumford built the Mumford Plantation. He operated a general store that catered specifically to the crowds flocking to the mineral spring bathhouses. The area was used as a Confederate camp during the war, and a school was located by the springs.
