It was organized at a meeting on February 7, 1900, held in the Old Governor’s Mansion, after Mrs. Henrietta Kincaid Chappell was issued a charter to organize a chapter of NSDAR in Milledgeville, Georgia. She was the wife of the first president of Georgia Normal and Industrial School (now Georgia College & State University). On February 26, 1900, the charter members met to choose a name for this new chapter: Nancy Hart. Nancy Hart was a Revolutionary heroine of considerable fame and controversy. Due to problems documenting the lineage of one of the charter members, the official date of organization for the Nancy Hart Chapter was not recorded until October 5, 1900. On December 3, 1900, the chapter charter, Number 512, was issued to the chapter by the Vice President General in Charge of Organization.

According to eMembership, none of the founding members was a proven descendant of the great Nancy Hart, so it is not known why the name was chosen at the time. In 1932, Nancy Hart Chapter NSDAR of Milledgeville, GA, and Steven Heard Chapter NSDAR of Elberton, GA, erected a replica cabin on the approximate site of Hart’s frontier house made of stone and wood.

Our Chapter The Nancy Hart Chapter, NSDAR, Milledgeville, Georgia, was the 19th chapter to be organized in Georgia.
