The chapter chose to be known as the Peter Early Chapter to honor the 28th governor of Georgia and namesake of Early County. Early was born on 20 June 1773 in Madison County, Virginia. He attended Lexington Academy (later Washington College), graduated from Princeton College, and studied law in Philadelphia. He practiced law in Wilkes, Greene, and Oglethorpe counties. Early also served as a state representative, U.S. congressman, judge of the Ocmulgee Circuit, lawyer, and trustee of the University of Georgia. He helped draft the state\u2019s first penal code. He is buried in Greensboro City Cemetery along with his father, Joel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although Peter Early (1773\u20131817) was not a Revolutionary War patriot, his father and grandfather were. His father, Joel Early (1738\u20131806), served as a lieutenant in the 5th Virginia Regiment. His grandfather, Jeremiah Early Sr., furnished supplies to the army in Culpeper County, Virginia.
