Our Chapter

The name Tomochichi may bring to mind coastal Georgia, as the Yamacraw leader Tomochichi famously served as a mediator between the Creek and General James Oglethorpe during the founding of Savannah. Yet the Tomochichi Chapter, NSDAR, proudly serves three counties in the mountains of northeast Georgia—Habersham, White, and Rabun.

The chapter was organized by Miss Addie Green Bass, who had previously been a member of a Savannah chapter. After moving to northeast Georgia to teach at Piedmont College, she founded the Tomochichi Chapter to bring together women in the region who shared an interest in honoring their Revolutionary ancestors and serving their communities. Along with Miss Addie, two of our original members were the Eppes sisters, great-granddaughters of Thomas Jefferson.

The Tomochichi Chapter has a long and distinguished history, and members look forward to celebrating its 120th anniversary in 2029. Members are especially proud to claim Lena Mae Stribling as one of their own and to honor her work in helping to secure the beloved historic site, Meadow Garden, for the Georgia State Society DAR.

Today, Tomochichi Chapter members remain deeply engaged in supporting veterans and active-duty military personnel, while also working to document and preserve the historic places that tell the story of their distinctive Appalachian community.
